Learn about Search Engine and SEO in 1 article!

As a Coffee member, I know we’re still new to SEO but we’ve actually been doing some of the SEO tasks for the past couple of months now and are getting familiar with it. We’ve done pretty much about On-page SEO like keyword research, title, meta description, link, image and so on.

But it’s not everything about SEO.

There’re much more than that. I still think that we need to understand the concept of SEO. So that’s why I choose this topic for weekly training session of my team because we’re gonna do the landing page copywriting a lot in the upcoming time.

1. What is Search engine and how it works?

The first thing is also a core thing that will help you understand every task in SEO. That is getting to know what is a search engine and how it works.

Imagine for a minute that you’re librarian, you work at library but not a normal one but you’re librarian for every books in the world. People depend on you every day to find the exact book they need

So what do you do?

You will need a system.

You need to know what’s inside every book and how books relate to each other in a very short time. Your system needs to take in a lot of information and spit out the best answers for every questions.

Look at the image here you will see the way a search engine will release bots called spiders or crawlers. It will crawl and analyze your website based on their algorithm and index them into their library catalog, save it there

and whenever a user type a search query or key words, the search results will appear the exact suggestions for those keywords within less than 1 second.

2. What is SEO

Now for our case, we have Magestore.com as our main website. We really want to rank our landing pages. But how we can do it with the algorithm?

Every algorithm has multiple factors that contributes to the decision of ranking a page.

That means the key to get higher ranking here is to follow exactly the ranking factors that the search engine includes.

This action to get higher rankings and more traffics is called Search Engine Optimization we often call it short - SEO.

So SEO is kind of opposite to Paid ads, where you can gain significant FREE traffic by ranking on the search engine’s organic results.

3. Ranking factors

How Google can determine what pages should go on the first page of search results?

There are 2 big factors that contribute to the ranking decision of Google.

  • ONPAGE: The biggest factor is relevance. Onpage SEO shows search crawlers what our website is all about. It helps search engine see that a page is a good search result because it’s relevant and useful

  • OFF-PAGE: shows search crawlers that a website is important and valuable. It helps search engines see that a page is a good search result because the brand and website are authentic and popular.

  • TECHNICAL SEO: In Vietnam, SEO people often combine Technical SEO and On-page into one because we all have to work on our own website.

Both On-page and Off-page factors combined, there are more than 200 smaller factors.

But there’re no ways we can do all of that, we just need to focus on some of the most important.

After going through everything basic about search engine and ranking factors. It’s now time to dive into some steps to be able to rank on Google.

Step 1: Set up essential tools and plugins

Your first step is to make sure that you have 3 important SEO tools set up and ready to go.

Tool 1 - Search console

This tool makes it super easy to track our site’s performance in Google. It can also help you find technical SEO problems that holding us from rank better on search results. And most important this tool help you see the keywords that you rank for, and where you rank for them.
Unlike third-party tool, this data comes straight from Google, so we know it’s trustworthy and legit.

Here are 3 very simple ways to do it.

  • Find long tail keywords as known as organic keywords with Google suggest.
Google always suggests keywords that people are actually searching for. So when you see Google keywords suggestion, you know that lots of people are searching for that term.

  • Next, find keywords with the Google Keyword Planner.

THe GKP is Google’s official keyword research tool. And technically it’s especially designed for Google Ads, but it’s still super useful for SEO keyword research. You just need to enter the topic or general keyword you’re looking for and check out the suggestions that the tool spits out.

  • Spy on online community

This technique is still one of the effective ways to know which topics or keywords that our targeted customers are discussing about.
For each example if our target customer is Magento retailers, we can go to Magento community, Magento group on Reddit, Facebook, Quora and lots more you can think of.

Step 2: Keyword-Optimize your content

So, after you’ve installed all the necessary tools and found a handful of keywords. It’s time to keyword-optimized your content.

  • Use keywords in the first 100 words of the page. Google puts more weights on terms that show up at the top of the page.So make sure you use keywords there if possible.

  • Keep the URL short which is what Magestore is usually doing with all the landing page now. And it works

  • Heading: you wanna use your keyword in H1, H2, H3 tag

  • Image optimization

Step 4: Fix technical errors

The next one is to fix SEO technical errors.

As I mentioned that Technical SEO is very crucial in the way that it helps search engines crawl into our website and read information and rank our content.

So if our website has problems related to technical SEO, we want to fix it right away.
